This course is an introduction to the statistical properties of languages and their origins, that are often related to the need to reducing the cognitive effort of speakers or listeners. The course is primarily relevant to anybody interested in how languages (and animal communication) are and why. In this course, students will learn about a myriad of statistical laws of language beyond the scope of traditional courses on information retrieval, how to analyze them and how to explain them based on general principles of (human) cognition. Students will learn about the mathematical and computational models that have been developed to explain these regularities. During this journey, students will enrich their current knowledge with concepts and tools from linguistics, biology, cognitive science, information theory and multidisciplinary physics. The course is also relevant for researchers interested in evaluating or adapting algorithms, machine learning methods,...based on the real statistical properties of language. As these regularities are often the result of reducing the cognitive effort of language users, the course is also relevant to researchers interested in developing resources or systems that are easier to use or understand by humans of in developing natural language processing tools that exploit the real constraints of the human brain. This course identifies topics that are both fundamental to computer architecture and relevant to the design of microprocessors of the future. The emphasis is always on insights that will be useful to the graduate student, whether he/she goes on for a PhD or joins a microprocessor design team. We will deal with principles, tradeoffs, and implementation details. We will cover mechanism (e.g., trace caches, helper threads, branch prediction, bandwidth). We will discuss the implications of multi-core on future microprocessor design. We will examine current state of the art microprocessors. In addition to the class lectures/discussions, students will carry out an out-of-class project and make a presentation on what they learn to the class. There will be a written final examination that will be taken outside of class and turned in prior to the final class meeting.

The RISC-V Summit Europe will be the premier event that connects the European movers and shakers - from industry, government, research, academia and ecosystem support - that are building the future of innovation on RISC-V. HackUPC is back! HackUPC is the student hackathon organized by Hackers@UPC since 2016 and, currently, is the largest in Europe! A hackathon is a free event where participants have limited time (in our case 36 hours) to develop a team project from scratch. Apart from the project, there are lots of activities and talks. You'll meet people with your same interests and learn about the newest technologies. Besides, there is the possibility of networking with the sponsoring companies. This is an expansion of the topic "OpenACC and other approaches to GPU computing" covered on last years editions of the Introduction to CUDA Programming. This course is delivered by the GPU Center of Excellence (GCOE) awarded by NVIDIA to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in association with Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC). It will provide very good introduction to the PUMPS Summer School run jointly with NVIDIA - Further information on the 2023 PUMPS Summer school will follow soon. As an NVIDIA GPU Center of Excellence, BSC and UPC are deeply involved in research and outreach activities around GPU Computing. OpenACC is a high-level, directive-based programming model for GPU computing. It is a very convenient language to leverage the GPU power with minimal code modifications, being the preferred option for non computer scientists. This course will cover the necessary topics to get started with GPU programming in OpenACC, as well as some advanced topics.

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and hands-on experience in developing applications software for processors with massively parallel computing resources. In general, we refer to a processor as massively parallel if it has the ability to complete more than 64 arithmetic operations per clock cycle. Many commercial offerings from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel already offer such levels of concurrency. Effectively programming these processors will require in-depth knowledge about parallel programming principles, as well as the parallelism models, communication models, and resource limitations of these processors.

This tutorial will introduce the audience to the BSC tools for heterogenous programming on FPGA devices. It describes OmpSs@FPGA, as a productive programming environment for compute systems with FPGAs. More specifically, the tutorial will: Introduce the OmpSs@FPGA programming model, how to write, compile and execute applications on FPGAs Show the "implements" feature to explot parallelism across cores and IP cores Demonstrate how to analyze applications to determine which portions can be executed on FPGAs, and use OmpSs@FPGA to parallelize/optimize them.

The tutorial will motivate the audience on the need for portable, efficient programming models that put less pressure on program developers while still getting good performance for clusters and clusters with GPUs. More specifically, the tutorial will: Introduce the hybrid MPI/OmpSs parallel programming model for future exascale systems Demonstrate how to use MPI/OmpSs to incrementally parallelize/optimize: MPI applications on clusters of SMPs, and Leverage CUDA kernels with OmpSs on clusters of GPUs

Euranova is organising an online 3 days hackathon, called Novhack, from the 10th to the 12th of March. Our goal is to make students live a unique experience through knowledge sharing and coaching, and with real-world data. Concretely, we created Novhack to be: 1) A learning experience: each group will have the opportunity to be accompanied by a Euranovian coach who will guide you and your team throughout this adventure. You will have time to talk to experts who will be able to answer your most technical questions. 2) A concrete project: with our industry partner Toyota, we built a real-life use case, to give you the chance to learn, hands on, how to solve a big data challenge and familiarise yourself with MLFlow, a tool to put your ML models into production. 3) A challenge: you will have to be creative with your group to develop a solution to a classification problem with a limited amount of data. A fun adventure! Filled with teamwork, great prizes, and unforgettable moments.

Build and train deep neural networks, identify key architecture parameters, implement vectorized neural networks and deep learning to applications. Train test sets, analyze variance for DL applications, use standard techniques and optimization algorithms, and build neural networks in TensorFlow. Build a CNN and apply it to detection and recognition tasks, use neural style transfer to generate art, and apply algorithms to image and video data. Build and train RNNs, work with NLP and Word Embeddings, and use HuggingFace tokenizers and transformer models to perform NER and Question Answering.

Bitsxlamarato is a hakacton aimed at solving real challenges related to the topic proposed. Several challenges proposed by real oragnisms (hospitals, institutions, companies, etc.) are presented to the participants who must choose one of them and develop, during the three days, their computer science solution to it. The Cellular Automata (CA) paradigm is widely adopted for modeling complex systems. Based on their inherently parallel nature, the execution of CA can efficiently exploit the benefits of parallel computing. The seminar introduces the basic techniques for the parallel execution of CA, which are based on domain space partitioning. In addition, some strategies are presented that are useful to further speedup the parallel execution. Among these, particular focus will be devoted to load balancing techniques, which have demonstrated their validity for reducing execution times in real case application scenarios. This seminar is given by Andrea Giordano: Andrea Giordano is a researcher at the Institute for High Performance Computing and Networking, National Research Council of Italy (ICAR CNR). He received the master's degree in computer engineering from the University of Calabria, Rende, Italy, in 2001. He pursued his Ph.D. in computer science and systems engineering at the University of Calabria, Italy, in 2011. His current research interests include parallel computing, high-performance computing, cellular automata, quantum computing, swarm intelligence, distributed simulation, Internet of Things, and smart grids.

This seminar introduces Cellular Automata (CA), a widely adopted paradigm for modelling complex systems, such as those related to natural phenomena (e.g., lava flow and landslide simulation, traffic and pedestrian behaviour, prey-predator models, etc). In CA models, the complexity of the systems emerges from the interaction of its elementary units, described by relatively simple local rules. Starting from simple examples of CA, the seminar will introduce real case scenarios related to landslide and surface-subsurface flow phenomena, and then focus on the implementation of the CA models on CPU and GPU (CUDA). This seminar is given by Alessio de Rango: Alessio De Rango is a researcher at the Department of Environmental Engineering (DIAm), University of Calabria, Italy. His research interests mainly regard high-performance computing for scientific applications, modelling and simulation by cellular automata, and evolutionary computation. He is a member of CeSMMA. One of the leading research activities focuses on developing software libraries for high-performance numerical simulation through high-level abstraction frameworks based on the Cellular Automata paradigm. The research aims to develop embedded techniques for the automatic development of high-performance parallel applications capable of maintaining semi-optimal performance on various parallel architectures, including multi-core, many-core and distributed systems. During his PhD, he contributed to developing the OpenCAL library developing the GPGPU version. He contributed to the extension of the library for distributed systems, making several optimization algorithms, including techniques for load imbalance and techniques for highly localized phenomena.

A Datathon is a weekend-long competition where you are challenged to work on real-world business cases from different areas of Machine Learning, AI, and Data Science. You are given some datasets in order to answer questions or implement solutions Our event will take place physically in UPC's School of Mathematics and Statistics, located in Pau Gargallo 14, Barcelona! You can find a map here. You will have access to classrooms to work with your own laptop. We will provide you with WiFi. Meals will take place in the courtyard! The event will start on Saturday November 12 at 9h, when we will present the challenges. You'll be able to work for 32 hours. The event will end on Sunday 13 at 17h, when the closing ceremony will take place. All university students are allowed to attend! Some data analysis or coding skills might be useful but not required to participate. In fact, there will be a special prize for rookies! We will provide you with meals, WiFi and some nice swag. The objectives of this course are to understand the fundamental concepts supporting message-passing and shared memory programming models. The course covers the two widely used programming models: MPI for the distributed-memory environments, and OpenMP for the shared-memory architectures. The course also presents the main tools developed at BSC to get information and analyze the execution of parallel applications, Paraver and Extrae. It also presents the Parallware Assistant tool, which is able to automatically parallelize a large number of program structures, and provide hints to the programmer with respect to how to change the code to improve parallelization. It deals with debugging alternatives, including the use of GDB and Totalview. The use of OpenMP in conjunction with MPI to better exploit the shared-memory capabilities of current compute nodes in clustered architectures is also considered. Paraver will be used along the course as the tool to understand the behavior and performance of parallelized codes. The course is taught using formal lectures and practical/programming sessions to reinforce the key concepts and set up the compilation/execution environment.

The Symposium 'Programmable Life' kicks-off the Barcelona Collaboratorium for Modelling and Predictive Biology, a new initiative launched by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and EMBL Barcelona, which will be a new space for interaction of computational biology, AI and machine learning ¿ promoting researchers to collaborate, share ideas and synergize across disciplines and scales. This symposium will gather renowned international researchers in these fields, as well as the scientific community from Barcelona and the rest of Spain.

Attendance to the 1h presentation by Taku Komura within the Training Workshop on: Current trends on virtual humans. The keynote presented different works of the author and focused on two papers: "FaceFormer: Speech-Driven 3D Facial Animation with Transformers" and "DeepPhase: Periodic Autoencoders for Learning Motion Phase Mani-folds". During the seminars I took notes of the main points. After the seminars I read the two papers to get a better understanding of the work presented and wrote a 3 page summary of the contents of the presentation, including details about the papers. Since the technical of the papers was mainly about machine learning, my work also involved some extra research in order to better understand the contents.

This hackathon is aimed at application developers interested in learning about the impact of the latest Arm processor features on their High Performance Computing and Machine Learning applications. Arm researchers and engineers will describe the company's HPC tools (including compilers, math libraries, debugging and profiling tools) to explore what benefits this processor can bring. During the hackathon, the MN4 CTE-ARM cluster will be used and various applications developed at BSC will be optimized to be executed on this type of hardware. This activity is organized in collaboration with the Arm company, within the framework of the Arm-BSC Center of Excellence and the European EPI project.

In this course, you will learn to design the computer architecture of complex modern microprocessors. All the features of this course are available for free. It does not offer a certificate upon completion.

Embedded Software and Hardware Architecture is a first dive into understanding embedded architectures and writing software to manipulate this hardware. You will gain experience writing low-level firmware to directly interface hardware with highly efficient, readable and portable design practices. We will now transition from the Host Linux Machine where we built and ran code in a simulated environment to an Integrated Development Environment where you will build and install code directly on your ARM Cortex-M4 Microcontroller. Course assignments include writing firmware to interact and configure both the underlying ARM architecture and the MSP432 microcontroller platform. The course concludes with a project where you will develop a circular buffer data structure. In this course you will need the Texas Instruments LaunchPad with the MSP432 microcontroller in order to complete the assignments. Later courses of the Specialization will continue to use this hardware tool to develop even more exciting firmware.

his course is intended for the Bachelor and Master's students, who like practical programming and making IoTs applications! In this course, we will talk about two components of a cyber-physical system, namely hardware and operating systems. After completing this course, you will have knowledge of both hardware components and operating systems. You are able to plan and use embedded operating systems in resource-constraint devices for Internet-of-Things (cyber-physical system) applications. In addition, you can use Cooja simulation for designing and simulating wireless sensor network applications. This course can also be taken for academic credit as ECEA 5360, part of CU Boulder's Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. Programmable Logic has become more and more common as a core technology used to build electronic systems. By integrating soft-core or hardcore processors, these devices have become complete systems on a chip, steadily displacing general purpose processors and ASICs. In particular, high performance systems are now almost always implemented with FPGAs. This course will give you the foundation for FPGA design in Embedded Systems along with practical design skills. You will learn what an FPGA is and how this technology was developed, how to select the best FPGA architecture for a given application, how to use state of the art software tools for FPGA development, and solve critical digital design problems using FPGAs. You use FPGA development tools to complete several example designs, including a custom processor. If you are thinking of a career in Electronics Design or an engineer looking at a career change, this is a great course to enhance your career opportunities. With genomics sparks a revolution in medical discoveries, it becomes imperative to be able to better understand the genome, and be able to leverage the data and information from genomic datasets. Genomic Data Science is the field that applies statistics and data science to the genome. This Specialization covers the concepts and tools to understand, analyze, and interpret data from next generation sequencing experiments. It teaches the most common tools used in genomic data science including how to use the command line, along with a variety of software implementation tools like Python, R, and Bioconductor.

Flexible
