The FIB professor is one of the five UPC winners in recognition of research excellence.

Researcher Luis Velasco Esteban, professor at FIB assigned to the Department of Computer Architecture, has received recognition from the ICREA Acadèmia of Generalitat de Catalunya programme in the 2020 call.

This programme awards the winners with a grant of 40,000 euros per year for a period of five years for research activities. In the present call, the UPC scientists Cristina Canal, Cristina Masoller, Ana Isabel Pérez Neira and Marino Arroyo, have also been awarded.

Velasco, researcher at the Advanced Broadband Communications Center (CCABA) and the Optical Communications Group (GCO), focuses his research on the development of different technologies that allow the evolution of 5G towards a scalable decentralised architecture. This is the second ICREA Acadèmia received by the FIB professor, after being awarded in the 2015 call.

ICREA Acadèmia has contributed since 2008 to stimulate researchers working actively and rewarding the excellence of Catalan public universities in this field. In the 2020 call, the program has recognised in total the work of thirty researchers.
