On 21 March, the UPC awarded the degree of doctor 'honoris causa' to jazz pianist Ignasi Terraza, an alumni of the FIB and the first blind person to graduate in Computer Science in Spain. Professor Jordi Cortadella was the godfather of the ceremony, which was held at the ONCE Auditorium in Barcelona.
Ignasi Terraza (Barcelona, 1962) is one of the most prominent jazz pianists in Spain with a significant international presence.
His interest in technology led him to study Informatics Engineering at the FIB, which he combined with his musical education and performances in Barcelona. He became the first person with visual impairment to graduate in this discipline in Spain, a milestone that was aided by the emergence of new terminals and adaptability measures.
In his investiture speech, Ignasi Terraza spoke of the fundamental role of technology in improving the autonomy of people with disabilities. He gave as an example the role of computers for blind people: "Today, computers are essential for everyone with this disability and have become our auxiliary eyes, as they allow us to access information through the internet, books and recorded music, as well as being an aid to mobility, daily life, etc.". However, there are still many challenges ahead, as Terraza pointed out.
Ignasi Terraza received from the hands of the rector, Daniel Crespo, the diploma, the cap, the ring and the white gloves, as symbols of the doctorate. In his closing speech, the Rector explained that "Ignasi Terraza embodies all the values of the UPC: he is a person who is committed and honest in what he does. He has transformed his environment and has detected opportunities where others saw problems. His critical thinking, curiosity and perseverance have helped to reduce the digital divide and guarantee equal access to technological resources".
