On October 21, the 2024 edition of Premios de Investigación de la Sociedad Científica Informática de España y la Fundación BBVA awards ceremony took place.
David López Álvarez, a professor in the Computer Architecture Department, has been awarded the Ramon Llull prize for his outstanding career in the field of Computer Engineering education. This recognition has been granted not only for his successes in research and technology transfer but also for his international influence in developing the ACM/IEEE Computing Curricula proposal, a key reference for undergraduate and master’s studies in Computer Engineering.
“Computer science students need to be aware of the impact of their work on society. This can only be achieved through an educational program that provides an ethical perspective, which goes beyond purely technical training.”
From this perspective, López Álvarez has dedicated his career to strengthening education in computer engineering, not only from a technical viewpoint but also from philosophical and humanistic angles—a significant task for which he has been awarded the Ramon Llull Prize. His research has focused on analyzing which educational methods are most suitable for acquiring certain knowledge and skills, some of which are technical while others are more general, such as communication, sustainability, critical thinking, and creativity.
