Last Friday, 4 October, the ceremony for the 1st UPC Prize for Social Commitment took place at the Auditorium of the Vèrtex building, as part of the event inaugurating the new academic year.
Lídia Montero, professor in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, received the award in the field of inclusion for promoting the Meetup programme, a pioneering initiative that supports students with autism spectrum disorders and is being taken as a model by other universities.
In the field of cooperation, the UPCReutilitza programme, coordinated by Professor Fermín Sánchez from the Department of Computer Architecture, received this first prize for promoting the reuse of computer equipment, as well as for its long trajectory and its broad impact in the educational, local and international spheres.
The award also recognised the work of the UNESCO Chair of Sustainability in the field of sustainability, and Professor Núria Salán from the Terrassa School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering (ESEIAAT) in the field of gender equality, for her voluntary dedication to promoting technological vocations among girls. Finally, the jury paid a posthumous tribute to Professor Montserrat Soliva.
Launched for the first time this academic year, at the initiative of the Vice-Rectorate for Social Responsibility and Equality and in collaboration with the UPC Social Council, the UPC Prize for Social Commitment was created to highlight the programmes, projects and activities developed by the UPC community.
