José Luis Pontón Martínez, an alumnus of the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering (GEI), a Master's Degree in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI), and a PhD from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has received one of the 2026 SCIE–Fundación BBVA Research Awards in the Young Computer Science Researchers category.
The award recognises his contributions to the advancement of virtual reality, particularly through the development of innovative techniques for human motion reconstruction and the modelling of interactions between multiple users and their environment. His research has enabled accurate real-time avatar reconstruction and expanded the capabilities of collaborative immersive experiences.
During his time at UPC, José Luis Pontón collaborated with the ViRVIG research group at FIB. He is currently a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, one of the world's leading research centres in computer science.
