The UPC Social Council has awarded the 27th UPC Prize for Quality in University Teaching, in the teaching career category, to Professor David López Álvarez from the Department of Computer Architecture, who teaches at the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB).
The jury highlighted that David López is an inspiring example for the academic community due to his dedication to the continuous improvement of teaching, research and innovation. His sustained teaching quality over the years is supported by excellent results and very high satisfaction ratings, reflecting impeccable work that has resulted in an outstanding level of student satisfaction year after year.
The jury of the UPC Prize for Quality in University Teaching has agreed to present Professor David López’s candidacy for the Jaume Vicens Vives distinction for quality in university teaching awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
David López Álvarez holds a PhD in Computer Science from UPC and a postgraduate degree in Art and Societies of East Asia from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. He is an expert in computer architecture and computer systems structure, particularly in storage devices, input/output systems and data processing centre organization. Considered a reference in teaching innovation, he is a specialist in engineering education and in the relationship between technology, sustainability, ethics and human rights.
Since 1991, he has been a professor in the Department of Computer Architecture at UPC. From 2015 to 2019 he served as director of the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE), where he promoted the implementation of the postgraduate programme in University Teaching Training in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. He also worked on the creation of the UPC doctoral programme in Engineering, Science and Technology Education, the first in Spain and the fourth in Europe.
He is currently coordinator of the interuniversity research group STEAM University Learning Group – EduSTEAM. At the international level, he has been a member of engineering education associations such as the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI). He received the AENUI Award for Quality and Innovation in Teaching 2020 and the UPC Award for Social Commitment 2019, among other recognitions.
