Microsoft has launched a new research project with inLab FIB, the innovation and research laboratory of the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB), to investigate advanced techniques for improving the performance of graph databases, a key technology for managing large information networks and an essential component of many artificial intelligence applications.
Graph databases play a fundamental role in managing connections between large volumes of data and are widely used in areas such as social media platforms, financial fraud detection and knowledge systems that power many AI applications. As these networks continue to grow in size and complexity, new strategies are needed to retrieve and process information more quickly and efficiently.
Within this project, Microsoft and inLab FIB are working together to develop advanced techniques capable of predicting optimal query strategies and improving the efficiency of processing increasingly large and complex datasets. These advances are expected to deliver faster applications, more efficient use of computing resources and greater scalability to meet future technological challenges.
The initiative further strengthens inLab FIB's role as a bridge between academic research and industrial innovation by promoting knowledge transfer and collaboration with leading international technology companies to develop high-impact solutions.
The project is part of an agreement between the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) and Microsoft, through which the company joins the Connèxia UPC programme, an initiative designed to strengthen knowledge transfer between the University and industry. The three-year agreement reinforces the long-standing collaboration between Microsoft and inLab FIB and opens new opportunities to advance applied research and technological innovation.
