BSC/UPC Hackathon 2019

You are here

Are you addicted to coding and solving complex problems? Come to the 4th Annual BSC/UPC Hackathon and test your problem solving skills.

The 4th Annual BSC/UPC Hackathon, co-organised by Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), will challenge the participants with problems to solve in a limited time.

The hackathon is addressed to university students or recently graduated PhDs with good coding skills. The challenges will be distributed in three main areas: GPU Computing, Parallel Programming and Software Security.

To participate, you will need good coding skills, primarily in C and shell, but knowledge in other programming languages such as C++ and python is recommended. You should also be familiar with version control systems, such as git and mercurial, and have a good knowledge on Unix systems. You will be asked to solve problems in three different topics: GPU/FPGA Computing, Parallel Programming and Software Security. You will be given access to high-end machines with last generation technology and high speed network. We will also provide you with food and beverages so that you can focus on coding.

Leonardo Bautista‐Gómez, Senior Researcher at BSC and co-organiser of the hackathon, said: "this year we wanted to touch in one of the most important challenges in High Performance Computing: Energy Efficiency. To reach sustainable exascale computing it is mandatory to develop software tools that can extract as much computing power form the hardware using the least amount of energy. This task is at the heart of the European project LEGaTO, which collaborates on this year’s hackathon. The participants will have the opportunity to work with real codes used at BSC and develop energy efficient techniques to improve performance and reduce power consumption. The candidates will be evaluated on the performance of their solutions, the effectiveness, the quality of the code and their speed. The winners will take home nice prices."

The participants will be given access to high-end machines with last generation technology and high-speed network. The organisers will also provide you with food and beverages so that you can focus on coding.

The hackathon will take place on Wednesday November 6th, at the UPC Campus Nord - C6-E106 Room, at 8h. A jury will evaluate the participants and the winners will take home nice prizes.
