Coinciding with the 32nd Conference on University Education in Computer Science (JENUI 2026), the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) hosted the first events commemorating the 50th anniversary of university Computer Science studies in Spain, organised by the Conference of Computer Engineering Schools and Faculties (CODDII).
The programme began with a tribute to CODDII's honorary presidents in recognition of their contribution to the development and consolidation of university Computer Science education in Spain. Among those honoured was Maria-Ribera Sancho, a professor at FIB who served as CODDII president from 2006 to 2010.
The following day, an academic session reviewed the evolution of university Computer Science programmes over the past fifty years and reflected on the current and future challenges facing the discipline. The session also addressed the recent update of official degree frameworks in areas such as Data Science, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, High-Performance Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, Quantum Computing, and Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing.
These events marked the beginning of a commemorative programme that will continue throughout the 2026–2027 academic year at universities across Spain.
The coincidence of this celebration with the 50th anniversary of FIB highlights the School's role as one of the pioneering institutions in the establishment and consolidation of university Computer Science studies in Spain and reinforces its long-standing position as a benchmark in Computer Engineering education.
