The Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) and the Barcelona-ACM-W Chapter have organized the activity: "Mayday! Mayday! Computing Needs Women", as part of the 8M celebrations,

In celebration of International Women's Day, the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) and the Barcelona-ACM-W Chapter have organized a special event on Wednesday, 5th of March. The goal of this event is to highlight the essential role of women in the field of computer science and encourage reflection on the challenges still present in the fight for gender equality in this area.

The event will begin with a welcome by the Vice Dean of FIB, Gemma Sesé, followed by the keynote talk titled "Women in Computing: hidden & silenced", delivered by Núria Castell Ariño. This talk will serve as the starting point for an enriching discussion about the role of women in the tech sector.

Additionally, there will be a special focus on the presentation of ACM-W Europe, an initiative that promotes the participation and visibility of women in computing, and womENcourage@, an event aimed at creating networks and encouraging women’s involvement in the scientific and tech community.

The program for the event is as follows:

  • 12:15 PM – Welcome by Gemma Sesé, Vice Dean of FIB.
  • 12:25 PM – Keynote "Women in Computing: hidden & silenced", by Núria Castell Ariño, former dean of FIB and chair of the Barcelona-ACM-W chapter.
  • 12:45 PM – Debate on women in the history of computer science and the current situation.
  • 12:55 PM – Presentation of ACM-W Europe, highlighting its work in promoting women’s participation in computing.
  • 1:15 PM – Presentation of womENcourage@, with a focus on opportunities for participation in the 2025 edition.
  • 1:30 PM – Open floor for questions and reflections.

This event is open to everyone and provides a unique opportunity for those interested in promoting a more equitable and diverse computing field.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 5th of March at 12:15 PM, at the Auditorium Manuel Martí Recober at the FIB.
