Engineering Degrees 2003

Degree courses (2003 curriculum)

The Bachelor Degree in Computing Engineering will be launched in September 2010. The course will last for four academic years and the first three semesters will all be open for enrolment in September 2010. The fourth semester will be opened in February 2011.
Three different degrees may be taken at the School of informatics:

Degree in Informatics Engineering (Postgraduate)
Diploma in Computer Software (Undergraduate)
Diploma in Computer Systems (Undergraduate)

Although the above curricula are different, most of the most relevant subject matter is covered by all three. Diploma holders in Computer Software and Computer Systems can join the second cycle of the Degree in Informatics Engineering.

Degree in Informatics Engineering (2003 curriculum)

The Degree in Informatics Engineering gives students a general grounding in computing and examines most subjects inherent to the field in depth. In addition, students may tailor their optional subjects to pass one of the areas of specialisation currently offered by the FIB, namely:

  • High-performance architectures and computing
  • Software engineering and information systems
  • Fundamentals of computing
  • Data management and operations
  • System interfaces and integration
  • Advanced programming techniques
  • Telematic networks and operating systems

This course is designed to be completed in five years.

Diploma in Computer Software (2003 curriculum)

The aim of the Diploma in Computer Software (ETIG) is to provide students with all of the professional skills related to the design, building and maintenance of IT systems for organisations, particularly as regards the software they use.

This course is designed to be completed in three years.

Diploma in Computer Systems (2003 curriculum)

The aim of the Diploma in Computer Systems (ETIS) is to provide students with all of the professional skills related to the building, implementation and maintenance of IT systems, particularly as regards the hardware they use.

This course is designed to be completed in three years

Curricular structure

Curricula are divided into semestral subjects. Each subject is assigned a number of credits according to the study load. A set minimum of credits must be obtained to pass a course. These credits must be obtained by passing:
  • All of the compulsory subjects on the course
  • The required optional subjects
  • The final project

Duration of courses

The Degree in Informatics Engineering lasts 10 semesters, with a first cycle of six semesters and a second cycle of four semesters. The diploma courses comprise a total of four semesters. The first two semesters are common to the three courses. Once students have successfully completed these two semesters, they may choose which of the courses they wish to take, with the exception of students from higher training cycles who can only choose one of the two diploma courses. Students who complete one of the diploma courses may go onto the second cycle of the Degree in Informatics Engineering.

Normative of the permanence

The normative of the Technical University of Catalonia force the students to pass a minimum of 15 credits corresponding to mandatory subjects the first year of their studies. Otherwise, the student has to abandon his degree. Also the students are forced to pass the Selection Phase in a maximum of 2 years from the entrance to the faculty. Otherwise the student should abandon the degree.

Selection Phase

The Selection Phase consist of the subjects from the first course, so the two first semesters. Are 8 subjects with a sum of 67,5 credits.

While you are attending subjects from the Selection Phase it is not possible to attend subjects from higher courses. During this period, the faculty observe your performance to decide if you will be able to finish your degree in a reasonable time. So the student will have to pass:
  • During the first year (two semesters), pass at least 15 credits.
  • In a maximum of 2 years (four semesters), pass all the subjects from the Selection Phase.
If an student don't carry out this two conditions,  in general he should abandon his studies in the faculty.

The Selection Phase is common in the three degrees at FIB.

Requisites between subjects

In order to be able to register in a subject is necessary to have carried out some necessaries requisites. There are 4 different types of requisites:

  • Prerequisite. If a subject A is prerequisite of another subject B, it means that to be able to register B is necessary to have passed the subject A.
  • Corequisite. If a subject A is corequisite of another subject B, it means that to be able to register B is necessary to have passed or to be register in the subject A.
  • Precorequisite. If a subject A is precorequisite of another subject B, it means that to be able to register B is necessary to have been register in A.
  • Orequisite. If two subject A and B are orequisite of another subject C, it means that to register C is necessary to have passed the subject A or B.
