What are the Official Master's Degrees?

Official Master's Degrees are official university studies. Therefore, the fees for these courses will be charged at officially fixed public prices. These Master's Degrees provide advanced training for academic, professional and research specialization. This is the first implementation fixed by the new configuration of university studies within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). According to the focus, there are three different  types of Official Master's Degrees:

  • Professional, intended to train students in professional practice
  • Research, intended to train students in research skills
  • Academic, of a mixed nature, intended to train students both in professional practice and research skills

How are the Master's Degrees in IT area that are offered by the FIB

They are built upon the organizational structure of the Barcelona School of Informatics and the contribution of all associated departments.

All the Master's Degrees guarantee generic knowledge equivalent to that of the Informatics Engineering; so the graduate students will have the training needed to develop responsibility tasks in the Informatics area.

Masters 2013-2014


Master in Artificial Intelligence (MAI)
Joint degree, academic-oriented with research specialization.
Entry places: 50

Master in Informatics Engineering (MEI)
Academic-oriented with professional specialization.
Entry places: 50

Deadline for application: July 12th
Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI)
Academic-oriented with research specialization.
Entry places: 100

Deadline for application: July 12th
European Master in Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM)
High excellence master, research and professional oriented.

Entry places 26

Deadline application: Closed
European Master in Information Technologies for Business Intelligence (EMIT4BI)

High excellence master, research and research oriented.
Entry places: 24

Deadline for application:

- January 2nd, for students applying for scholarship
- April 30th, non-European fee paying students
- June 30th, European fee paying students

European Master in Distributed Computing (EMDC)
The EMDC programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degreee from two universities.

Students from any country are welcome to aply. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available.

Master in Sustainability, Technology and Innovation (MSTI)

International quality program, designed under the framework of the Atlantis Project for the development of joint degrees between universities of the European Union and the United States of America in the field of Sustainability, Technology and Innovation.

Entry places: Up to 5 scholarship places each year, selected from the students that apply for the Master in Sustainability (UPC).

Deadline application: June 15th

Master in Information Technology (MTI)
Academic-oriented, professional specialized and face-to-face teaching Master's Degree.

Fading out degree. No new admissions.
Master in Computer Architecture, Networks and Systems (CANS)
Academic-oriented and face-to-face, inter-university Master's Degree.

Fading out degree. No new admissions.
Master in Computing (MC)
Academic-oriented and face-to-face, inter-university Master's Degree.

Fading out degree. No new admissions.
Master in Artificial Intelligence (MIA)
Academic-oriented and face-to-face, inter-university Master's Degree.

Fading out degree. No new admissions.

Who can apply for the 2013-2014 academic year?

Bachelors, Engineers or Technical Engineers in computer science (or similar branch of knowledge), or those people who have a bachelor's degree issued by a higher education institution that allow to the issuer country to enrol in a master's degree, are allowed to apply for the Master's Degrees.

How long do they take?

The study load of the Master's Degree is 90 or 120 ECTS.
