ABSTRACT

The development of applications for parallel computing systems is
becoming increasingly challenging. Peta-scale systems are now becoming
readily available to the scientific computing community, and planning is underway to achieve exa-scale within the next decade. The vast power of these systems, coupled with a corresponding increase in application code complexity, is making the limitations of existing programming and performance tools ever more apparent. If developers are going to be able to effectively utilize these systems, then a new generation of tools will be required that seamlessly integrate with each other and the target systems on which they operate. The open source Parallel Tools Platform (PTP) Project was established in 2005 to create a freely available best-practice integrated tool workbench designed to increase the productivity of parallel application development. PTP has increased in popularity over the years, and is now used by a growing community of developers in scientific and engineering fields. This talk will give an overview of the PTP project, and present some of the key features of PTP that can increase developer productivity and improve the software engineering practices for parallel application codes.

BIOGRAPHY

Greg is currently a senior software engineer, IBM's HPC Tools Architect, and project leader for the Eclipse Parallel Tools Platform project. His research interests focus on tools for parallel computers, program debugging, distributed computing and operating systems. Greg received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Tasmania in 1986 and received his Ph.D. from Monash University in 2000. He has been involved in the computing industry for over 25 years. He worked in a variety of positions during this time, including Manager, Corporate Computer Systems for Griffith University and Manager of the Queensland Parallel Supercomputing Facility in Brisbane, Australia, where he was responsible for establishing and managing the largest parallel computing system in Australia. More recently, Greg was team leader of the Cluster Research Team in the Advanced Computing Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
