ABSTRACT
A few major trends are converging into a "perfect storm" that has the potential to fundamentally change computing as we know it today. The end of Dennard"s scaling has already caused a significant slowdown in CPU performance. By 2018, DRAM and Flash scaling is also expected to stop. However, by 2020 we expect over 30 billion intelligent devices will be connected to the internet, resulting in unprecedented amounts of data. The infrastructure required to collect, process, store, and analyze this data requires transformational changes from the foundations of computing. The talk will argue that three of the most important technologies necessary to support this data-centric world are: compute specialization, a new memory technology, and new interconnect fabrics. The talk will discuss some of the ongoing efforts at HP and HP Labs, from the workload optimized low-power servers of project Moonshot, to the new architectures enabled by novel nonvolatile memory and photonics.
