ABSTRACT
This talk will present the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH, research of the DICE Team, and the Atmosphere platform federating distributed resources for VPH applications.

The ACC Cyfronet AGH not only provides computing, storage and networking services, but, first of all, it has proven many times its unique ability to integrate scientific communities in Poland. Recently, in a series of PL-Grid projects, initiated by Cyfronet AGH, we have built an appropriate e-infrastructure and elaborated a set of domain-oriented user-lever services for a large number of scientific domains.

Distributed Computing Environments (DICE) Team is a curiosity- and research-driven group, specializing in implementation of grid, web, and cloud technologies in the large-scale distributed computing. DICE develops new methods, tools and environments and applies these innovative solutions in eScience, healthcare and industrial domains.

The objective of the VPH-Share project is to develop a cloud platform for sharing data and computing services for the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) research community. We have elaborated a hybrid cloud platform, called Atmosphere which permits its users to launch and maintain distributed applications upon cloud computing resources. Atmosphere takes care of marshaling the necessary resources and provides tools with which applications can be deployed and shared. The data storage federation is achieved by an aggregation of data resources in a client-centric manner and exposing it via a standardized protocol that can be also mounted and presented as a local storage so a file system abstraction is provided. Applications which have already been deployed within the VPH-Share platform include a.o. the ViroLab Comparative Drug Ranking System, the @neurIST morphological workflow, and the OncoSimulator tool.

BIOGRAPHY
Marian Bubak, M.Sc. in Technical Physics and Ph.D. in Computer Science, is an adjunct at the Department of Computer Science AGH, a senior staff member at ACC Cyfronet AGH, and the Professor of Distributed System Engineering at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests include parallel and distributed computing, grid and cloud systems, and eScience. He has authored about 230 papers in this area, co-edited 17 proceedings of international conferences, and is a member of editorial boards of three journals in the field. He was a chairman and an organizer of several international conferences (HPCN, Physics Computing, EuroPVM/MPI, SupEur, HiPer, ICCS, HPCC, e-Science). For about 10 years he is leading the DICE Team (http://dice.cyfronet.pl/ ); he also initiated the CGW series of workshops (http://www.cyfronet.krakow.pl/cgw14/ ). He served key roles in a series of EU-funded projects, including CrossGrid, K-WfGrid, CoreGRID, ViroLab, GREDIA, UrbanFlood, MAPPER and VPH-Share.

Conference Information
