First year student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering at FIB, Pablo Vega Gallego, has been a finalist in the 20th UPC Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology Award with his high school project “Creation of a low-cost companion robot for the elderly: NIE2”.
The project, selected from more than 200 submissions, was supervised by Màrius Belles from Col·legi Sagrada Família in Barcelona and proposes the development of a low-cost caregiving robot that enables personal assistance at home and direct, immediate communication with family members through an instant messaging application.
The award ceremony took place on 19 September in the Sala del Llac of the UPC Rectorate building and was attended by the Rector of UPC, Francesc Torres, the Vice-Rector for Teaching and Students, Núria Garrido, and representatives of RESA - Residencias Universitarias as the sponsoring entity, as well as the different collaborating organizations of the award.
The 20th UPC Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology Award was granted to Ester Gil, a student from Institut Guindàvols in Lleida, for her project “Aerodynamic study of samara flight”. In addition, the Higher Vocational Training project “OpenStack, the potential of the flexibility of your resources”, by Ivan Urgell, a student from Institut L’Estatut in Rubí, was also awarded.
The UPC Award is organized by the University with the sponsorship of RESA - Residencias Universitarias and the collaboration of UPCnet, the UNESCO Chair in Sustainability, the UPC University Research Institute in Science and Technologies of Sustainability, the Exploratori dels Recursos de la Natura, Ciencia en Acción, the “la Caixa” Social Foundation and the Vallès School of Architecture. Its main objective is to promote the interest of secondary school and higher vocational training students in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), while also rewarding the incorporation of a sustainability perspective.
