The Government of Catalonia has agreed to award the Sant Jordi Cross 2024 to Carme Torras Genís for her outstanding career and versatility, as one of the most brilliant Catalan scientists in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence, and also a prominent science fiction writer.
The Sant Jordi Cross is one of the highest distinctions that can be awarded to a person by the Government of Catalonia. The award was created in 1981 with the aim of recognizing individuals or organizations that, through their merits, have provided outstanding services to Catalonia.
Torras holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of Barcelona, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD in Computer Science from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She is currently a Research Professor at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (IRI), where she leads the assistive robotics research group.
Throughout her career she has received numerous awards, including the Narcís Monturiol Medal for Scientific and Technological Merit from the Government of Catalonia (2000), the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (2020), and the National Research Award granted by the Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) in 2020. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain, a fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence and of the IEEE, a member of the Academia Europaea, and of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona.
