Historical exhibition: “La computació, de l’àbac al PC”

As part of the activities planned to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC·BarcelonaTech) is organizing this exhibition during the months of May and June this year.

Firstly open to everyone at the L'illa Diagonal Shopping Center and then directed to the university community, at the Rector Gabriel Ferraté Library (BRGF).

From 8th to 27th May 2017, L'illa Diagonal Shopping Center, Barcelona, first floor (between stores - 39 - Bershka and - 40 - Forescast).

10th May, 1:00 p.m., official inauguration attended by representatives of the district Sants-Les Corts, rector of the UPC (Vicerrector Fernando Orejas) and management of L'illa.

From May 29 to June 29, 2017, at the Rector Gabriel Ferraté Library, Campus Nord, UPC.

31th May, 1:00 p.m., Institucional inauguration.

The exhibition shows a wide and varied set of tools and objects related to computing throughout history, from the ancient abacus to the first personal computers. The website and the catalog developed for the exhibition explains in detail and in their historical context all the exhibits organized into eight thematic areas. These areas have been identified as a symbolic verb representing the main purpose of the objects involved:

I – Counting
II – Adding
III – Calculating
IV – Accounting
V– Computing
VI – Computerizing
VII – Communicating
VIII – Popularizing

The exhibition, expanded and augmented from other previous ones where FIB has collaborated, is the result of the cooperative work of FIB with several other UPC units, and with the homonymous centers of the Universidad de la Rioja and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
