General goals

For anyone in a management position, an understanding of the internal communications in organisations is of basic importance. Furthermore, technicians in high positions of managerial responsibility must also dominate the existing set of tools designed to make their role in the organisation more efficient. For this reason, the objective of this subject is for students to come away with an understanding of the main techniques that lead to an acquisition of managerial skills, which university graduates must dominate in order to be successful in the workplace. This is an eminently practical subject/project aimed at ensuring that students come to dominate and use these tools.

Specific goals

Knowledges

  1. Mastery of the main techniques for fostering basic management skills.
  2. Mastery of oral expression. Learn how to improve one's communication skills when dealing with others.
  3. Mastery of written expression. How to write a report.

Abilities

  1. Ability to lead and motivate a work team.
  2. Ability to put over and defend the content of a business project.
  3. Mastery of the tools and techniques based on the course material.

Competences

  1. Ability to organise one's own work: ability to set priorities for various tasks, plan one's time, and organise one's notes.

Docent Methodolgy

The theory classes basically employ lectures and, where appropriate, provide examples of business development so that students can pick up ideas to put into practice during the problem sessions.







Some of the theory classes may include a talk by an entrepreneur or director on real-life approaches to the problem under consideration.







The purpose of the problem sessions is to help students develop their management and communication skills. The methodologies employed range from group dynamics to brainstorming and role plays.

Evaluation Methodgy

This course involves the presentation and defence of a fictitious project before a tribunal comprising course teachers and one other member of faculty. Continuous assessment is a basic feature of the course.







The project will be presented and defended in a simulated business setting. The evaluation will take the following points into account: dress, formal communication style, the presentation structure, etc. The projects are designed and formalised throughout the course. Only those meeting at least the minimum requirements may be defended in public.







Given the nature of the course, there will be no final exam. Students" performance will solely appraised using continuous assessment. Attendance of classes and the development and defence of the final project therefore are vital to pass the course.







Given the foregoing, attendance will count towards 30% of the final grade.







The project makes up the remaining 70% of the final grade. Students work in a team and each member makes an individual contribution which is assessed separately. The grade for the whole group as a whole makes up 60% of the project marks and the remaining 40% are awarded on an individual basis.







This approach is designed to foster teamwork, in which members share responsibility for attaining a common objective.
