Degree coordination

For proper management of the curriculum of Computer Engineering studies of the FIB, different models of coordination have been established at different levels.

Subject coordination

There is a coordinator for each subject whose name can be found in the teaching guide.

Horitzontal coordination

Horizontal coordination has been defined in order to manage that the load of the different subjects that a student can enroll is distributed as evenly as possible throughout the course.
The subjects considered in each course and the names of the horizontal coordinators are:

  • First course
    • Subjects: F, IC, PRO1, FM, EC, PRO2, M1 y M2
    • Coordinator: Mercè Mora (Head of Academic Studies for Initial Phase)
  • Second course
    • Subjects: PE, BD, SO, EDA, CI, EEE, IES, XC, PROP, AC
    • Coordinator: Josep Ramon Herrero (Vice-dean for Undergraduate Studies)
  • Horizontal coordination is performed by each specialisation coordinator

Vertical coordination

It is desirable that the subjects of the same matter that work the same set of skills coordinate with each other, so there is the figure of a matter coordinator. In the case of compulsory subjects, this coordination is called vertical matter coordination; in the case of credits for specific technology it is called vertical specialization coordination.

Coordinators of matter and specialization meet regularly (in person or virtually) with the teachers of the matter/specialization to ensure that the competences assigned to the matter/specialization are well spread and worked properly from among the subjects. They also make an annual report to the vice-dean of Undergraduate Studies of the FIB, coordinator responsible for the entire curriculum.

Five different matters have been defined in all core subjects of the curriculum. The subjects covered by each matter and the name of their coordinator are:

  • Matter: Structure and Computer’s Technology
    • Subject: F, IC, EC, CI, AC
    • Coordinator: José Mª Llaberia
  • Matter: Algorithmics. Programming and Data Structures
    • Subject: PRO1, PRO2, EDA, PROP
    • Coordinator: Lluís Márquez
  • Matter: Mathematics and Statistics
    • Subject: FM, M1, M2, PE
    • Coordinator: Fernando Martínez
  • Matter: Operating Systems and Computer Networtks
    • Subject: SO, XC
    • Coordinator: Jaime Delgado
  • Matter: Software Engineering and Data Bases
    • Subject: BD, IES
    • Coordinator: Ernest Teniente

Functions of matter coordinator

As for the specific technology credits, they have been grouped into five specialties, each one with a coordinator responsible for that specialization competences are distributed appropriately among its subjects:

  • Specialization: Computing
    • Compulsory subjects: A, IA, LI, TC, G, LP
    • Complementary subjects: CN, IO, CAIM, APA, AA, SID, CL
    • Coordinator: Albert Atserias
  • Specialization: Computer Engineering
    • Compulsory subjects: DSBM, SO2, XC2, AC2, PEC, MP
    • Complementary subjects: CASO, PDS, STR, CPD, PCA, VLSI, PAP
    • Coordinator: Ramon Canal
  • Specialization: Software Engineering
    • Compulsory subjects: DBD, GPS, ER, AS, PES, ASW
    • Complementary subjects: SIM, SOAD, CSI, CBDE, CAP, ECSDI
    • Coordinator: Xavier Franch
  • Specialization: Information Systems
    • Compulsory subjects: ADEI, SIO, ER, DSI, NE, PSI
    • Complementary subjects: MD, IO, CAIM, MI, ABD, EDO
    • Coordinator: Ruth Raventós
  • Specialization: Information Technologies
    • Compulsory subjects: TXC, PI, SI, ASO, SOA, PTI
    • Complementary subjects: TCI, IM, AD, CPD, SDX, CASO
    • Coordinator: José Mª Barceló

Functions of specialization coordinators

Transversal coordination

Finally, professional skills deserve a separate coordination, which is called transversal coordination. The FIB has identified 9 professional skills: the 7 UPC common competences and 2 own competences. The names of the coordinator of each of the professional skills are:

  • Autonomous learning: Pere Marés
  • Teamwork: Alicia Ageno
  • Appropriate attitude towards work: Carme Martin
  • Solvent use of the information resources: Lluis Belanche
  • Sustainability and social commitment: Jordi García
  • Third language: Antonia Soler
  • Oral and written communication: David López
  • Entrepreneurship and innovation: Josep Cabré
  • Reasoning: Erik Cobo and Rafel Farré

Functions of transversal coordinators
Transversal coordinators meet every month in order to develop joint strategies to work with professional skills in different subjects of the curriculum. Meetings are overseen by the Vice-dean of Innovation, Fermín Sánchez.

Matter coordinators, specialisation coordinators and transversal coordinators meet once a year with the vice-dean Head of Academic Studies for Initial Phase, the Vice-dean for Undergraduate Studies and the Vice-dean of Innovation. The final responsible for coordination is the Vice-dean for Ungraduate Studies of the FIB.

All the curriculum coordinators are responsible for providing the members of the Commission on Quality of FIB with all the information they need to do their job.
